Visit the historic Catedral de Santa Ana

Head to the island's capital, Las Palmas, and right in the heart of the old town you'll find the Catedral de Santa Ana dominating the landscape. This impressive cathedral is the very first church of all the Canary Islands, having been ordered to be built following the conquering of Gran Canaria in 1478.

Construction began on the cathedral in 1500, but wasn't completed until nearly four centuries later. As you can imagine, this means that there were several different designers and artists working on the build, so you can see a number of different architectural styles throughout.

The three main ones being Gothic, Renaissance and Neoclassical. There is a small charge for adults entering the twin-towered cathedral, but it's well worth a look around. Inside you'll find chapels containing incredible sculptures and pieces of art.

Then there's also the Museo Diocesano de Arte Sacro, or Sacred Art Museum, located in the Patio de los Naranjos in the cathedral's south wing. The museum holds a number of fascinating artefacts, paintings and more sculptures for you to learn about.

As well as the captivating architecture and exhibits, a visit to the Catedral de Santa Ana wouldn't be complete without taking the lift up the south tower to take in the excellent panoramic views of the city and the harbour from the top.
